Sweat it Out- Talk it Out- How exercise can help men communicate better

During Men’s Health Week 12-18th June 2017

This week marks Men’s Health Week, as part of national initiative for Men’s Health Month, with this year’s theme focusing on ‘Keeping the Balance’, linking a healthy mind to a healthy body.

The idiom “Men are from Mars, Women are from Venus” is in most cases pretty spot on and one of the fundamental differences between genders, other than the physical, is our brain and how we use it to communicate.

Scientists have discovered approximately 100 gender differences in the brain and so it’s no surprise that men behave and communicate differently. But this doesn’t mean men don’t feel emotion, more so they lack the physical resources to express it as effectively as their female counterparts. Additionally, the ongoing stereotype of masculinity as tough, stoic and void of emotion, doesn’t help matters and can lead to mental and emotional health problems.

With this week’s focus on the connection between the mental and the physical, we are drawn to the importance of exercise and how it can act as an outlet for men to relieve stress, clear thoughts and communicate with like-minded people.

Exercise often provide the opportunity for a group environment offering a sense of community and belonging as well as the chance to talk to like-minded people. Whether it’s a running group, your local fitness center or a group exercise program, the benefits to both the physical and the mental are indisputable.

The link between our mind and our body is powerful, our mental health is important and must be looked after just as caringly and attentively as our physical health.
