What is an Exercise Physiologist?
Exercise physiologists study a bachelor degree for four years at university, learning the mechanics of the body, the importance of movement and the effect of exercise on pathology. They study how exercise can reduce and improve the impacts of disease or injury on the body and the good ones are passionate about helping people live life to its fullest.
But its more than just writing work out programs and helping people get fit, their duty of care extends beyond the physical, adopting a holistic approach that ensures the patient’s body, mind and emotional wellbeing are being cared for. This is not to say exercise physiologist can offer patients counselling but they are trained to be in tune and aware of their patient’s emotional state and part of this comes from really understanding the impacts of chronic disease on the mind and body.
People come to exercise physiologists for a whole range of reasons but more often than not, it’s because chronic disease is interfering with the persons quality of life and exercise is prescribed by a doctor as part of a holistic health plan. Exercise physiologists can help you reignite your lust for life by getting your body moving the way it’s designed to move with safe and technically correct exercises. What exercise can also offer is an improvement in mental state with the powerful effects it has on the mood and emotional wellbeing.
