Exercise Physiologists….More than just your average fitness junkie

Exercise Physiologists….More than just your average fitness junkie

Exercise physiologists study a bachelor degree for four years at university, learning the mechanics of the body, the importance of movement and the effect of exercise on pathology. They study how exercise can reduce and improve the impacts of disease or injury on the body and the good ones are passionate about helping people live life to its fullest.

But its more than just writing work out programs and helping people get fit, their duty of care extends beyond the physical, adopting a holistic approach that ensures the patient’s body, mind and emotional wellbeing are being cared for. This is not to say exercise physiologist can offer patients counselling but they are trained to be in tune and aware of their patient’s emotional state and part of this comes from really understanding the impacts of chronic disease on the mind and body.

People come to exercise physiologists for a whole range of reasons but more often than not, it’s because chronic disease is interfering with the persons quality of life and exercise is prescribed by a doctor as part of a holistic health plan. Exercise physiologists can help you reignite your lust for life by getting your body moving the way it’s designed to move with safe and technically correct exercises. What exercise can also offer is an improvement in mental state with the powerful effects it has on the mood and emotional wellbeing.

Exercise has been clinically proven to improve mental state by increasing the serotonin levels in our brain. Chemicals aside, it is empowering to see improvements in your body, its strength and what its able to achieve, especially when feeling controlled by chronic disease.

Exercising with an exercise physiologists also provides the opportunity to engage in a social environment that is safe and controlled, even more so in the case of group exercise, where you are working out with like-minded people who understand what you are going through.

In addition to the positive impacts on mental state, exercise improves sleep which aids in injury and disease recovery and can lessen symptoms of chronic disease, in turn reducing the risk of further complications.

In short, exercise physiologists are here to help you achieve your health and wellness goals and the best ones will provide a duty of care that goes above and beyond providing a supervised workout. The knowledge and understanding of the human body, chronic disease, pathology and the powers of exercise, should provide patients with peace of mind that you are being looked after, inside and out.
