The Heart Foundation categorises Cardiovascular Disease as an umbrella term of heart conditions that affect the blood vessels, cardiac muscle structure and cardiac function. It is one of the leading causes of death in Australia with 1 person dying every 12 mins from CVD. Most cardiovascular risk factors are preventable through a healthy lifestyle with dietary changes and regular exercise.
Exercise guidelines recommend 150 mins of moderate intensity or 75 mins of high intensity of physical activity per week to reduce the risk of CVD and maintain a healthy heart, however, this may seem a lot for individuals with a sedentary lifestyle and new to exercise. As an Exercise Physiologist, our role is to tailor the exercise program to your goals and current health status and gradually progress to improve your cardiorespiratory fitness through aerobic and resistance training.
Exercise can improve and maintain your heart health through:
- Lowering blood pressure
- Improving blood circulation throughout the heart and the body
- Improving lung function
- Increasing exercise tolerance
- Reducing fatigue
- Reducing bad cholesterol (LDL) and increasing good cholesterol (HDL)
- Reducing and managing weight
- Improving blood glucose levels
- Improving body’s ability to take in and consume oxygen
- Lowering stress
- Improving vascular wall function
Overall, evidently, exercise has shown to reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease and improve cardiorespiratory fitness. However, approximately 83% of the Australian adult population do not meet the national physical activity recommended guidelines and 1 in 7 report to adopting a sedentary lifestyle with no form of physical activity.
At Northside Allied Health, our aim is to reduce a sedentary lifestyle and incorporating aerobic and resistance training into your exercise program to improve your health status and reduce cardiovascular disease risk. We provide a client-centred approach and create an exercise program tailored to your goals and conditions. With the correct guidance and support from our Exercise Physiologists, we can lead you to adopt a healthy lifestyle in to your activities of daily living.
