CanBeatIt Cancer Management Program

shutterstock_160805246It is widely supported in research and literature that exercise is beneficial to those who are both fighting cancer and those who have overcome the disease. Evidence based research has demonstrated that exercise increases survival rates by 50– 60%, with the strongest effect for breast, colorectal and prostate cancers. Like most diseases there are contra-indications to exercise due to treatment, which is why prescription and supervision is vital for success in exercise programs.

Facts About Cancer and Exercise

It is widely supported in research and literature that exercise is beneficial to those who are both fighting cancer and those who have overcome the disease. Evidence based research has demonstrated that exercise increases survival rates by 50– 60%, with the strongest effect for breast, colorectal and prostate cancers. Like most diseases there are contra-indications to exercise due to treatment, which is why prescription and supervision is vital for success in exercise programs.

Surprisingly, the exercise guidelines for people with chronic conditions such as cancer are much the same as the general population, 150mins per week of moderate intensity cardiovascular exercise, 2-3 sessions of resistance training and flexibility on those days as well.  Although the person’s capacity may vary due to treatment and symptoms experienced, the theory is any physical activity is better than none.
